"Microsoft Excel has stopped working" Error

OK, this is driving me crazy.  I have an Excel 2013 spreadsheet in which I'm using Power Pivot and some VBA.  The following problem keeps happening.

1 - I open the spreadsheet and make some changes (either adding more data or, in the latest case, adding a couple new pivot tables and graphs)

2 - Everything is fine, macros work, data recalculates, etc.

3 - Save the file

4 - Try to reopen the file and I get an error.  The latest error is the "Microsoft Excel has stopped working" Error.  When I open the 'repaired' file essentially all the data and graphs are gone.

5 - I go back to the previously saved version, and it works fine.

Any ideas what's going on and how I can get past this problem?

Thanks

Jean

Hi Jean,

Based on your description, your excel file always crash in excel 2013. Could you tell me if this issue only appeared in a particular file or all files? Did you try any method to solve this issue? If you did, please tell me which methods you have tried.

This issue might be caused by several reasons, there are several common methods you can try:

First I suggest you try to open file in safe mode and check if it works in safe mode.

Click File > Excel Options > Add-Ins on the left side of the dialog. Then click the drop-down arrow at the bottom of the dialog box and select "COM Add-Ins" from the list, then click the GO button. What comes up is a list of COM-Add Ins that are loaded and running.

Then you can try to repair the Office:

  1. Go to Control Panel.

In Windows 8, on the Start screen, type Control Panel, and select Control Panel in the search results.

In Windows 7 or Vista, click Start > Control Panel.

  1. Click Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Click the Office application you want to repair, and then click Change.
  3. In Office 2013, click either Quick Repair or Online Repair.

If the issue still exists in safe mode, I suggest you to collect the event log and provide us with the whole error messages of event log.

Steps of collecting event log:

Open Event Viewer to check whether there's any error about the Excel/Word crash issue.

Press Win + R, type "eventvwr" in the blank box, press Enter. In the Event Viewer, browse to Windows Logs -> Application, there may be some errors after the crash.

Please try to collect this event log and post the whole event log message here. I can get more information about your issue from this message and help you solve it.

Hope its helpful.

Hi George-

Thanks for your response.  This error only happens with this particular Excel file--other, simple spreadsheets work fine.

I'd previously tried repairing Office, but I did that again.  It did not help the problem.

I'd also previously tried safe mode, and I tried that again.  It also did not fix the problem.

Here's the event log for the error:

This afternoon I was working on the previous (working) version of this spreadsheet (it's about 40 MB).  I added 2 new pivot tables and a graph.  I saved the file under a new name and closed Excel.  I reopened the new file in Excel and everything was working.  I added another graph and then saved it as a new name and closed Excel.  When I tried to open this file in Excel, I got the error about not enough memory, that I should  try the 64-bit version (which I am using) or add more memory (I have 16 G).  Then Excel stopped working.  I restarted my PC and tried to open each of the files I created today.  Neither would open.

Here is the event properties log:

This is still a problem, and it's getting really annoying.  But it only happens sometimes.  Going back to a working version of the file, I've made changes over the past few days.  Each time I make any significant change, I save it as a new filename and then reopen the new file to make sure it's working.  The changes I'm making are either adding data or adding new pivot tables and graphs -- nothing major, and no changes to macros.

Today, when I tried to open yesterday's last version, it failed again (event viewer below).  The earlier version from yesterday opened just fine.  The only difference between the two is one additional pivot table and graph.

Please help me find a fix for this issue.

OK, this is driving me crazy.  I have an Excel 2013 spreadsheet in which I'm using Power Pivot...

OMG!! I have a similar problem, but my file is in MS-Excel 2013 while my viewers have MS-Excel 2010. The message is about the file and the connection being corrupted.

Hi Jeans,

I noticed that the Faulting module of your event log is VBE7.DLL, the version of Excel may vary as may the version of VBE.DLL. You can Recompile the Project or Disable Compile on Demand.

Please refer to the instructions mentioned in the following article and verify the result.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_microsoft_excel_support_team_blog/archive/2012/09/07/excel-crashes-in-vbe7-dll-running-or-enabling-macro.aspx

Important: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Ensure to back up complete registry following steps mentioned in the article below involves editing registry entries.

Please refer to this article about how to back up and restore the registry in Windows:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/322756?wa=wsignin1.0

Hope it's helpful.

Emi-

Thanks for your response.

Several days ago I tried the steps in the article you mention.  I did both steps --  Recompile the Project and Disable Compile on Demand.

First, note that once a file causes Excel to crash when I open try to open the file, I have not found any way to open that file again.  So, I applied the steps outlined in the article to the previous version of the file which was not causing Excel to crash.  Since that version of the file was already working, I was not sure whether or not the changes made any difference.

I was then able to make further changes to that file and save them.  However, after about 4 or 5 changes and new versions of the file, the same problem returned.  When I tried to open the new saved version, Excel crashed and with the same VBE7.dll problem.

This happened again today.  I made changes to the file, and everything was fine for 4 revisions.  However, the 5th revision caused Excel to crash again.  Each time this happens I lose all the work I did on the latest revision.

Any other ideas how to fix this problem?  I'd be happy to send you both the working and non-working versions of the file.

Thanks

Jean
